Adherence Case 2

When ML visits the pharmacy on June 19, 2006, the pharmacist steps into the counseling area to talk with her. The pharmacist starts by saying, “You know how to take your hydrochlorothiazide, right?” ML says that she does. The pharmacist says, “Controlled clinical trials have proven that hydrochlorothiazide is an effective antihypertensive and a good diuretic that works by blocking reabsorption of sodium and chloride ions, thereby increasing the quantity of sodium traversing the distal tubule and the volume of water excreted.” ML nods and smiles. The pharmacist continues, “For optimal control of hypertension, sustained administration is essential.” ML nods and smiles. The pharmacist is pleased and says, “Well, good. I’m glad you understand, and I’ll see you when the next refill is due.”
