Vaccination for HPV

LL is an 18-year-old female college student visiting the student health center for the first time this semester. LL lives in the dormitory and has elected to receive a meningococcal vaccine. She has no chronic medical conditions and no known allergies. Her past surgical history includes an appendectomy at age 11. At this visit, she states that she is “getting over a cold” and is experiencing rhinorrhea with a clear discharge. She is afebrile, and her other vital signs are within the normal range for her age.

LL is sexually active with one male partner and uses condoms for contraception. She has not undergone a pelvic examination or Pap test because she has not wanted her parents to know of her sexual status. Due to her social history, the nurse practitioner suggests that LL should receive the HPV vaccine.
